Our Story

We Grew Marijuana.
The Government Noticed.

This is the story we tell in Section 3 of our landing page.
The one about 15 to 120 years in federal prison.

Susanne Friend holding armfuls of fresh produce from FriendlyAquaponics

FriendlyAquaponics, Honokaa, Hawaii. First USDA-certified organic aquaponics operation in the country. Costco account. Trained thousands of farmers worldwide. And then we got curious about one more crop.

We built something beautiful.

Tim and I spent $150,000 building an aquaponics farm on the Big Island of Hawaii. Fish feed the plants. Plants clean the water. The whole system breathes together. We grew lettuce and herbs and greens that tasted like they were alive, because they were.

We earned the first USDA organic certification ever given to an aquaponics operation. The first food safety certification too. We had a Costco account. We trained thousands of farmers from all over the world. We sold our training materials and intellectual property to every continent.

FriendlyAquaponics was real. We built it with our hands. And it was crushing us financially.

The math was simple. And brutal.

$150,000 to build the farm. $100,000 of that was a home equity line of credit on our property, the land we’d built our house on with our own hands, every wire and pipe.

The farm was producing beautiful food. But beautiful food and positive cash flow are not always the same sentence. We were underwater. The debt was real. The stress was relentless.

That $100K HELOC would come back to haunt us for sixteen years. It nearly cost us our home. That part of the story is still being written.

We were broke, we were desperate, and we were curious.

So we experimented.

Hawaii. Aquaponics. A system that could grow anything. And a plant that everybody on the island knew was worth real money.

We wanted to know: could marijuana grow in aquaponics?

Curiosity. Financial desperation. A system built for growing. We tried it.

Look at the photo at the top of this page. That woman holding armfuls of organic lettuce, grinning in the Hawaiian sun, standing next to the farm she and her husband built from nothing? That is also a federal criminal.

Same woman. Same farm. Same hands.

The government came.

Federal charges. Not state. Federal.

When you hear the number, you will not believe it. 15 to 120 years. That was the sentencing range. For two people with no criminal history who grew a plant in a fish tank.

Four years and three months of our lives consumed. Lawyers. Court dates. The weight of it on your chest when you wake up at 3 a.m. and remember: this is real, this is happening, and it may never end.

We almost lost everything. The farm. The house. Each other.

Then, the paper tiger.

After four years and three months, after 15 to 120 years hanging over our heads like an axe, here is what the federal government of the United States of America actually did to us:

Three months each.

Not three years. Not thirty. Three months.

A paper tiger. The worst four years of our lives, and the resolution was three months. We served our time. We came home. We rebuilt everything.

The storm does not get to decide who you become on the other side.

We tell this story because we earned the right to tell it.

Not from a textbook. Not from a weekend workshop. From the inside of the storm, looking out.

When we say “we have been where you are” on our landing page, we are not being poetic. We are being precise.

We know what it feels like when the ground disappears. When the people you trusted vanish. When you cannot see one single reason to believe tomorrow will be different from today.

But we know it can change. Because we changed it.
